Kedarnath 2026 season at a glance
The Kedarnath temple opened on 22 April 2026 and is scheduled to close around 11 November 2026 (the exact winter closing date is confirmed near the end of the season based on weather). The two best windows to travel are May–June and September–October. September in particular rewards you with quieter trails, clearer autumn skies and far less crowding, though nights are colder an excellent time for a road trip in a comfortable, heated Urbania.
One non-negotiable: Char Dham registration is mandatory. Every traveller must register at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in (or the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app) and carry the QR-coded Yatra Registration Number. It is scanned at Sonprayag, Gaurikund and the temple gate. Pilgrims without it are turned back.
Where does the Urbania actually drop you?

The road route from Delhi looks like this:
Delhi → Haridwar → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Rudraprayag → Guptkashi → Sonprayag → (shared jeep) → Gaurikund → (16 km trek) → Kedarnath Temple
- Delhi to Sonprayag is roughly 445–450 km and takes 12–14 hours, which is why almost every group splits the drive across two days.
- Most Urbania groups halt overnight at Guptkashi or Rudraprayag, both of which have good hotels, the last reliable ATMs, and better acclimatisation before the climb.
- From Sonprayag, you transfer to a government-authorised shared jeep for the final 5–6 km to Gaurikund. This short stretch is reserved for local transport only — no exceptions, even for premium vehicles.
- Gaurikund is the last motorable point and the official starting base of the trek.
Practical tip: because your van waits at Sonprayag/Guptkashi, keep your heavy luggage locked in the Urbania or at your hotel, and carry only a small daypack for the climb. A good operator will have the driver park safely and stay reachable for your return. From Gaurikund to the temple: your three options
Once your Urbania drops you and you reach Gaurikund, you have three ways to cover the final ascent.
1. The 16 km trek
The Kedarnath trek distance from Gaurikund is 16 km one way (the trail was rebuilt longer and safer after the 2013 floods). It climbs from about 1,980 m at Gaurikund to 3,583 m at the temple an altitude gain of roughly 1,300 m.
- Ascent: 6–8 hours depending on fitness and pace.
- Descent: 4–6 hours (quicker, but harder on the knees).
- Waypoints with rest and medical aid: Jungle Chatti, Bheembali, Lincholi (Linchauli) and Kedarnath Base Camp.
- Start early leave Gaurikund by 5:00–6:00 AM. Mountain weather deteriorates after noon.
2. Pony, palki or porter
For elderly parents or those who cannot trek, ponies (roughly ₹2,500–₹3,500 one way) and palki/palanquin (roughly ₹8,000–₹12,000 one way) are available. Always book at the official government counters at Gaurikund never from touts on the trail. Prices vary year to year, so confirm on the day.
3. Helicopter from Phata, Sirsi or Guptkashi
The fastest and most senior-friendly option. Helicopters operate from three lower helipads — Phata, Sirsi (Sersi) and Guptkashi directly to the Kedarnath helipad, a 5–10 minute flight. From the helipad it is a short 500–700 m walk to the temple.
- Book only through the official IRCTC HeliYatra portal (heliyatra.irctc.co.in). Your Yatra Registration Number is required. Beware of fake booking sites — the government blocks these every season.
- Flights run mainly 6:00–10:00 AM, because valley winds pick up later in the day. Always plan a morning slot.
A popular combination for mixed-age groups: the whole family drives up together in the Urbania, younger members trek, and elderly members fly one or both legs by helicopter — then everyone reunites at the van in Sonprayag/Guptkashi.

- Carry cash from Guptkashi — there are no reliable ATMs beyond it.
- Acclimatise: spend a night at Guptkashi (1,319 m) before ascending. Don’t drive from the plains and start the climb the same day.
- Pack layers, rain protection, personal medicines and a basic altitude-sickness kit.
- Children: the trek is tough for under-10s — consider a palki for them, and avoid the July–August monsoon window entirely due to landslide risk.
